We've decided to start heading in the direction of living in a tent. Instead of contemplating if we want to do it or not, we've decided that we are unless God puts a definite stop in our plans. To get prepared for this new way of living, we're going to begin in our home by purging the things that we won't have in the tent. Things such as the refrigerator, oven and dishwasher. I'm going through all our junk food and frozen foods and using everything up until our fridge is empty and the junk food is gone. This way I can prepare for eating healthier and eating things that don't need to be refrigerated. In the tent, we'll have an ice box that can keep ice frozen for up to 5 days so we can store some cold things in that if we wanted. Once our fridge is empty, we're going to unplug it and begin using an icebox in our home. Once we begin that, then we'll move onto not using our dishwasher.
We're looking into getting a 16x32 military tent to live in as this would give us much more room than the wall tents we've been looking at. We can also set up dividers to separate rooms. We're still trying to figure out the whole bathroom and shower situation. Beau wants to get gym memberships and have a routine of going to the gym every day to take our showers. I think it'd be nice to have a shower by the tent as well in case we need it.
Here are some more pictures that I've been pinning for inspiration:
| How awesome would this be???
We've been driving around town looking for property that we could potentially set up on. There aren't many shady areas around Windsor since it's mostly farm land so we might have to venture outside of Windsor which I don't necessarily want to do. Beau would still be in school during the transition so we'd like to be close to his school like we are now. There is some property by the school however that I'm very interested in contacting the owners to see if they'd be willing to let us pitch our tent there. We've still got a while until we make the transition so I'm doing a ton of research about it so we don't go into it too blindly.
We're going camping with some friends in a couple weeks so I'm excited to have a mini version of our next adventure! :)

Just a few questions to take into consideration.
ReplyDeleteHow cold does it get there in the winter? How much snowfall?
Are you also doing this for portability? If so, how will you be hauling your entire household from one location to another?
How will you be handling waste disposal?
This sounds like a great adventure and I admire your pioneer spirit!
Thanks! :)
DeleteBeing in CO, the winters can get really cold which we've decided to wait until after this winter to begin living in a tent. We may or may not go through the winter next year- depending on if we feel comfortable enough by then. The snow is also hit or miss. Last year they didn't get too much snow.
We will be stationary for at least 6 months to a year so we wouldn't be moving our tent around. If we were going to be traveling in a tent, I'd probably just go with a regular tent to live in, rather than hauling around a big canvas or military tent.
We're still trying to figure out the best solution for us as far as the bathroom goes. I think that's the hardest part to figure out so far lol. Thanks for your questions :)
I also have to ask.... What about your power needs for lights, cooking, heat, etc?
ReplyDeleteSure! We most likely wouldn't have electricity except maybe a generator. We would use lanterns, candles, and/or battery operated lights. For cooking, we would use a propane stove and a grill and then would have a wood burning stove inside the tent to heat it up.
